Control of Power Electronic Converters in Distributed Power Generation Systems

This paper investigates the operation of a currentcontrolled Voltage Source Converter (VSC) under weakgrid conditions caused by large grid impedance. Threedifferent current controller structures are investigated; theconventional decoupled PI-controller in the synchronouslyrotating reference frame, Proportional Resonant (PR)controllers in the stationary reference frame, and the phasecurrent hysteresis controllers. The different controlstrategies are studied by simulation, and the results showhow large grid impedances can influence the dynamicresponse of the system. It is further discussed how theinteraction between the current controllers, the PhaseLocked Loop (PLL) and the grid inductance can triggerinstability when the voltage measurements are highlyinfluenced by the operation of the converter. The resultsindicate that the tuning of the PLL and the way of utilizingthe phase information is of large importance for the stabilityand dynamic response of the control system.
